ABOUT OCHER
Rooted in Bastar. Shaped by craft.
Ocher Studio is a design-led craft studio rooted in Bastar, Chhattisgarh. We work with artisans and designers to carry traditional Indian making into contemporary life — thoughtfully, respectfully and with a distinct point of view.
OUR NAME
Drawn from the colour of the earth.
The word "Ocher" means "मिट्टी का पीला रंग”-the yellow pigment of the earth." Inspired by this earthy hue, our work reflects deep-rooted connections to Bastar’s heritage, craft, and authenticity. We blend our tradition with innovation and create visual experiences for you.
OUR ROOTS
Where we Begin?
Bastar is home to a rich landscape of Dhokra, bell metal, iron, wood, bamboo, terracotta, handloom and other regional craft traditions. These are more than techniques. They carry generations of material knowledge, ingenuity and storytelling.
Ocher works within this landscape — preserving what is essential while creating space for new forms, functions and audiences.
OUR APPROACH
Preserve the knowledge.
Respect the maker.
Reimagine the object.
We believe craft can evolve without losing the
knowledge, material intelligence and human touch
that give it meaning.
CRAFT COMMUNITY
A living tradition
Ocher Studio is rooted in Bastar’s living traditions of craft, material and storytelling. Working with more than 80 artisans across diverse craft practices, we create contemporary objects while supporting the knowledge and skills passed down through generations.
Our purpose is simple: to carry the spirit of Bastar forward while strengthening the hands that keep it alive.
FOUNDER STORY
Built in Bastar, with Bastar
For founder and architect Nisha, Ocher began with a deeply personal connection to the place she grew up around. Bastar's craft traditions, materials and visual culture remained an enduring influence. In 2018, that connection became Ocher Studio — a practice built to bring artisans, designers and contemporary contexts into conversation.
What began with one artisan and one craft has grown into a wider community of makers, collaborators and ideas.
