About Us

Ocher Studio derives its name from the word "Ocher," which means "मिट्टी का पीला रंग”-the yellow pigment of the earth." Inspired by this earthy hue, our work reflects deep-rooted connections to Bastar’s heritage, craft, and authenticity. We blend our tradition with innovation and create visual experiences for you.

Founded in 2018, Ocher Studio collaborates with rural artisans from Bastar, Chhattisgarh, in India. Bastar is a hotbed of ancient folklore-oriented crafts like Dhokra art, Bell Metal, wood and Bamboo. We preserve and experiment with such regional art forms of Bastar along with professional architects and designers. Our engagement is not only limited to acting as a facilitator between the tribal artisans and the global world but also empowering them to share their intergenerational know-how through a wider outreach.

Ocher: Art & Emotions

Ocher Studio is more than just a platform for art—it’s a celebration of Bastar’s soul, culture, and craftsmanship that has thrived for centuries. Rooted in the heart of Chhattisgarh, we work with over 50 skilled artisans from 10 to 12 villages. These rural artisans are the sole reason behind the preservation and evolution of Bastar’s rich artistic heritage. Across 8 diverse crafts, each piece we create carries the essence of indigenous storytelling and skill, passed down through generations. Our mission is simple: to bring the soul of Bastar to the world while empowering the hands that keep it alive.

A Commitment to Preserve, Conserve, and Promote

At Ocher Studio, we are engaged in safeguarding and promoting more than 8 traditional crafts, including Dhokra, Bell Metal, Iron, Wood, Sishal, Bamboo, Tuma, Terracotta, and Handloom. We conserve these ancient techniques and help the artisans thrive in a marketplace. Our efforts ensure that these crafts do not fade into history but continue to provide sustainable livelihoods to the artisans. Dhokra, iron and wooden art, through constant efforts, has earned the GI (Geographical Indication) tags for Bastar. Through grassroots initiatives, we create opportunities that blend tradition with innovation, keeping Bastar’s artistic spirit alive for generations to come.

Ocher: A Way to Give Back to The Homeland

Nisha started this enterprise close to 6 years ago from Bastar, which is her homeland. For Nisha, Ocher Studio is more than an enterprise—it is a heartfelt tribute to her homeland. Growing up surrounded by the region’s vibrant crafts and rich culture, she always dreamed of giving back to the land that shaped her. There is always an unshakable bond attached to her working “In the homeland" and "For the homeland". An architect by profession and a passionate advocate for traditional arts, Nisha founded Ocher Studio with a vision: to bridge Bastar’s timeless artistry with the world while creating a meaningful impact for its artisans. This connection with the local artisans and their families is what fuels Ocher’s journey every single day.

Our Journey: From a Single Artisan to a Thriving Community

Ocher Studio’s constant efforts to make a ripple in the ocean have come to fruition. What started in 2018 with just one artisan and one craft has now blossomed into a thriving community of 50+ artisans and designers. Ocher Studio has taken Bastar’s craftsmanship beyond borders, from local workshops to international exhibitions. Our journey continues as we explore new ways to preserve, promote, and celebrate these age-old traditions.

We invite you to experience the artistry of Bastar at our offline store in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, or explore our collection online at www.ocherstudio.in. We dedicate our efforts and people to carry a legacy—come be a part of it.
